Congress subsidize the Overland railroad and the Central Pacific was soon building a line eastward from Sacramento. A year later the Union Pacific started West from Omaha. Fabulous mileage grants developed a building race with over 15 miles of track laid in a single day. Then in May 1869 the roads met at promontory point in Utah, the last rail was laid in the last spike was driven, the golden spike. The transcontinental railroad was completed. A solid steel band linked the Atlantic with the Pacific, and along this iron trail rolled iron horse streaming cause of coal smoke. It was the end of the pioneer. – The end of an era. 100 years had passed since Junipero Serra reach San Diego. His work had passed to other hands. California had come of age.
