Cabrillo found the Santa Barbara coast settled with many Indians who lived chiefly by fishing and their long red canoes ran far out in the blue channel. Governor Neve and Father Serra met to establish the Presidio of Santa Barbara but Serra did not live to see the founding of the 10th mission. In 1786 Fermin Lasuen sang mass here the first time and no day has passed since without mass at Santa Barbara. Here was natural beauty which inspired great buildings. The Adobe church was built by Padre Paterna from San Gabriel. In 1808 Padre Ripoll designed the beautiful fountain and five years later began the present church built around the original. The great twin towers rise on a high slope against the mountains like a sanctuary of Santa Barbara the protector of seafaring men.
